The project was launched in different Elementary and Middle Schools in rural areas of a town, Chowk Azam, which is located in the District of Layyah in South Punjab, Pakistan. Sixteen such schools were identified in the beginning of year 2019, using the WHO/UNICEF JMP service ladder for WASH monitoring. The project was started in four schools that were assessed as having ‘limited service’, who needed attention first. The goal was to improve the drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities to a ‘basic service’ level. It was made possible by a combination of:
- Educational sessions and distribution of flyers in the native language, Urdu, about the importance of hand hygiene and the correct method for maintenance of such in these schools
- Renovations to WASH facilities, from the money collected from our generous donors in the USA. The renovation work was finished by the end of January 2020
